intention, help and the road to hell..looking for discussion

I was reading this article about a group of people from the states, who went over to Haiti to adopt some children.http://www.magicvalley.com/news/article_31d3c3c6-b289-510c-a69d-a70ccaa786ca.html It sounds like a nice gesture. Help out these children who were orphaned by the earthquake, give them a family, a home. This group from the States, "rescued" thirty three "orphans" and attempted to cross the border with them into the Dominican Republic. I say attempted, because they had absolutely no documentation, no papers, no adoption certificates-nothing, and they got caught. They are now in a Haitian jail waiting to hear if they will be charged with "child trafficking". A spokesperson for the group said that they were "....simply trying to rescue orphans from the quake-stricken capitol and give them a better life"

Does that make it better? Perhaps. However, some of the children that they "rescued" were NOT orphaned. Even worse, these "good samaritans" were aware of this. They had no problem taking children away from their families because they KNEW what was best. I don't know what this groups intentions were. It would appear that they thought they were just helping. I wonder though if they will ever recognize the arrogance behind their actions. Can you imagine what the parents of these children must have been going through? Imagine not knowing what happened to your child, all because someone thought they had the right to decide what is best and the arrogance to think that this was acceptable. It is horrifying to me. There are many many children in Haiti that do need homes, that do need families, that are available for adoption.

I think that if you truly want to be of assistance to someone in need, you have to remove your "self" from the equation. Help is about..well helping. It is not about passing judgment. It is not about YOU deciding what is best for someone else. If you read an article about a person needing to raise money for a heart transplant, would you question their character? What if you found out that a year prior, they had spent their life savings on a trip to Bermuda? Would you decide that because of that trip they were somehow unworthy? What if they were a different skin color, or religion, or disabled. Would that make a difference? I would like to know what you think.
